Piedad obtained her M.Sc. in Cell Biology (in 1990) and subsequently her PhD in Immunology (in 1998), both from the University of Guadalajara in Guadalajara, Mexico. She then worked as a Research Associate in the Immunology Department in Guadalajara Jalisco, México, prior to coming to the US for her post-doctoral fellowship. During this period (2005-2008), she was a Post Doctoral Research Scholar at the Lymphoma-SPORE laboratory at the University of Iowa.
She joined the lab in 2009 and has been instrumental in completing our initial ECM1 and melanoma in vitro studies. Her current work involves studying the mechanisms by which ECM1 affects prognosis in breast cancers and melanomas.
Mikhail Kulak, PhD
Assistant Research Scientist, Weigel Laboratory
Phone: (319) 335-6828
Mikhail graduated from Novosibirsk State University (Russia) in 2003 with a Master's degree in Molecular Biology. In 2010, he obtained his PhD in Molecular Biology, State Research Center for Virology and Biotechnology "Vector", Russia. Right after he started working as a Post-doctoral scholar at the Department of Surgery, Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, University of Iowa and successfully finished in 2013.
Since 2013 Mikhail has been working as an Assistant Research Scientist in Dr Weigel's lab which closely collaborates with us participating in ECM1 project in perspective TFAP2C biology. His strong virology background and recently obtained cancer biology expertise will help us to establish ECM1 stable knock-down cancer cell lines which can be used as a powerful tool in ECM1 associated cancer biology.
